Horsemanship Working Student
Horse Apprenticeship Program
The horsemanship working student and horse apprenticeship program is offered from June through October solely at The Equestrian Center located in Sandpoint, Idaho.
The horse positions available are as follows:
Term: 3 weeks minimum- 2 months
Students will work five days a week, and pay for room & board fee of $350/wk.
One workday = 6 hours of work 8 am-2:30 pm
One workday = one 1-hour private (riding or groundwork) lesson
Purpose:
A full immersion opportunity for students with a strong motivation to learn. You will have various opportunities and exposure regarding all aspects of horsemanship and riding. Must be reliable, responsible, self-motivated, positive attitude, and above-and-beyond work ethic. You will help in the daily running of the farm including chores, unforeseen situations, and horse-related activities in exchange for unlimited training and learning opportunities.
Our facility is NOT a social center, nor do we babysit. If you're looking for a "social barn" experience TEC is not the place for you. We have clients and horses that travel to work with us from all over the U.S. to utilize our individualized training style and programs and appreciate the supportive, nonjudgmental, low-key atmosphere.

Our goal is in exchange for the working student’s effort, labor, and time, there is mutual benefit, without having their presence cause concern or stress.
WE WORK WITH YOUNG & “PROBLEM” HORSES THAT CAN BE UNRELIABLE AND DANGEROUS. WE NEED STUDENTS TO MAINTAIN AWARENESS, RESPECT, AND A 110% POSITIVE WORK ETHIC AND ATTITUDE WHEN PARTICIPATING IN OUR PROGRAM.
Candidate Requirements: Please do NOT apply if you don't fit the requirements
* Must have a valid driver's license (in the case of an emergency.)
* Appropriate attire for working with horses.
* NO SMOKING ON TEC PREMISES.
* Must submit THREE horse-related references.
* Minimum of FIVE years riding & handling horses. Must submit a current video of groundwork & riding.
* Positive attitude and an open mind for learning.
*"Above and beyond" work ethic.
Duties on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis may include but are not limited to:
*Tack Cleaning
*Catching/bathing/grooming horses
*Tacking/Untacking
*Round Pen/Liberty work
*Facility Maintenance- Dragging pastures, keeping barn area neat and tidy, etc.- NO STALL CLEANING, mowing (riding mower), etc.
*Hacking horses (under supervision) DOE
*Pony/Exercising Horses
*Show/ Clinic Preparation
Potential Additional Opportunities:
Attending competitions & clinics - auditing or participating
Trailer driving & backing/ Tractor Driving
Riding in the mountains- some overnight pack trips
More- DOE
